If your doctor suspects you have a gastrointestinal condition, like acid reflux, celiac disease, or stomach ulcers, they may order an endoscopy. Endoscopes are tiny devices that allow bariatric surgeons and other specialists to view the inside of the esophagus, stomach, and upper intestine. If you are scheduled for this type of procedure, follow the aftercare tips in this guide to promote a successful recovery.
How to Care for Yourself After an Endoscopy
1. Make Driving Arrangements
Bariatric surgeons put most patients under sedation for comfort during an endoscopy. Although you will be placed under observation for about an hour after the procedure as the sedative wears off, you will still need to have someone drive you home. It can take up to 24 hours for your judgment and reflexes to return to full capacity. If possible, ask a close family member or friend to help out with any transportation, errands, or chores until the effects of the sedation dissipate.
2. Avoid Eating for at Least One Hour
In preparation for an endoscopy, your physician will tell you not to eat or drink for eight hours before the procedure. You’ll probably be hungry afterward, but if your throat was sprayed with a numbing agent, it is best to avoid eating or drinking for at least another hour. Only start eating again when you can swallow comfortably.
Begin with sips of water and other cool, noncarbonated drinks. You can then move on to soft and easily digestible foods, such as soup, applesauce, and eggs. Avoid heavy meals, which can cause discomfort.
3. Soothe Your Sore Throat
It is normal to experience a sore throat in the 48 hours following an endoscopy. To relieve the discomfort, you can gargle with warm salt water, eat popsicles, or suck on throat lozenges.
4. Get Plenty of Rest
The key to a quick and full recovery is rest. You may feel tired or unfocused because of the anesthesia, so take the day to relax. Get plenty of sleep the night after the procedure, as well. Most people will be able to resume their normal activities after 24 hours.
