DNA testing is often used to determine familial relationships. There are a few different ways to do this, usually depending on what information is needed and which individuals are available to submit samples. If you’re looking for relationship testing, here’s what you should know about the most popular options.

3 Types of DNA Testing

1. Paternity

Paternity testing requires DNA samples from a child and their alleged father, usually from cheek swabs. These tests can also be performed during pregnancy with a blood sample from the mother. The samples are then compared, and the results determine whether or not it’s possible that the man is the child’s biological father. The test results can be about 99.9% accurate.

2. Sibling

dna testingIn some cases, two individuals may want to know if they share one or both parents, but the parents aren’t always available for testing. Siblingship tests involve collecting cheek swabs from potential brothers and sisters and then comparing the swabs to see if there are any matching genes.

This can determine with relative certainty if the two are half or full siblings. If the mother and/or father are also available to provide samples, the results are likely to be even more accurate.

3. Avuncular

Avuncular testing is a method for establishing paternity when the alleged father is not available for testing. It involves collecting samples from the child and a paternal aunt or uncle to establish similarities between the two DNA profiles.

It’s not as accurate as direct paternity tests, but since siblings share similar genes, it can establish parentage with relative certainty. If the mother submits a sample as well, results can be even more accurate.
