As the heart and soul of your car, the engine is a complex piece of machinery with many interconnected parts. Understanding what some of these components do and what could go wrong can help prevent engine repair problems. Here's what you should know to keep your vehicle in top shape.

Engine Components Every Driver Should Know

1. Pistons & Piston Rings

The pistons move up and down inside the cylinder, providing force that turns the crankshaft. Rings are attached to the piston to create a seal that keeps exhaust and fuel out of the sump while keeping engine oil out of the combustion chamber. Engine repairs may be needed if worn piston rings allow leaks, causing oil to burn off and preventing the engine from properly compressing air and fuel.

2. Spark Plugs

These parts provide an electrical spark to ignite the fuel and air mixture in the engine. A weak spark or one not timed properly could cause your engine to misfire or produce a knocking sound, especially during acceleration. This common issue occurs when the spark plug or its wiring wears out. Depending on the vehicle, you should replace spark plugs every 30,000 to 90,000 miles.

3. Crankshaft

The crankshaft uses the motion of the pistons to deliver the engine’s power to the drive train, which sends that power to the wheels. If the crankshaft’s bearings wear out, it won’t be able to turn. Also, if its O-rings fail, you will experience an oil leak.
