Changing Grass Quality

We have had a great year for growing grass. Hay production has been good in most places due to adequate rainfall; however, summer temperatures have reached 100 degrees and grass quality is deteriorating fast. Producers should consider providing supplement to brood cows to maintain good body condition and support cow milk production. Remember that we are actually feeding the microbes in the rumen to increase the amount of poor quality forage that can be digested. Following are several supplement options:

  • Accuration Range Liquid 32-5 is the best choice to support optimum cow production. The nutritional science behind this product allows cows to consume only what is needed to offset poor forage quality. This is very important to keep milk production in cows at a level to support the big calves that are nursing during this time of the year.
  • Accuration Block is another product that contains the same nutritional technology as the liquid 32-5 prod-uct. It is available in the 200# tub or the 500# big block. It works good for smaller herds.
  • MLS Cooked Tubs are also used during poor forage times of the year. Producers can expect about 1# per head per day consumption per cow. Several protein levels are available.
  • Range Cubes are also a good option. Plan 4 lbs per cow 3 days per week to supplement the microbes which will encourage more consumption of drying grass.

This table shows a 1200 lb cow in last 3rd of Gestation. She is consuming a dry 5.7% crude protein forage. Using the supplement tub enabled 19% more forage consumption resulting in a big increase in TDN intake!
