Black Angus beef is one of the most popular meats in the world. Found in supermarkets and steakhouses throughout the United States, the rich, uniquely marbled beef routinely commands a higher price than other varieties. Here are some interesting facts about this breed, including how much cattle feed they consume.

A Brief Guide to Black Angus Cattle

1. They Originated in Scotland

Angus cattle originated in the northeast of Scotland in Aberdeen, Kincardine, and Angus counties. With plentiful natural cattle feed, such as grass, hay, and grains, and a generally temperate climate, these areas were ideal for developing a hardy, versatile breed. The breed is still very successful in Scotland and Ireland, with most cultivation occurring in the Strathmore area.

2. Bulls Can Weigh Nearly a Ton

Angus cattle are relatively short compared to other breeds, at an average of 53 inches. However, Angus cows typically weigh about 1,200 pounds, and bulls can weigh around 1,900 pounds. To achieve this weight, the animals must consume about 4% of their body weight in cattle feed per day.

3. One Famous Angus Met the Queen

An Angus cow named Black Prince won the Birmingham and Smithfield Shows in 1876, making him one of the United Kingdom’s most prized animals. As a result, he received an invitation to Windsor Castle, where Queen Victoria inspected him. The queen later received a parcel of Black Prince’s beef for Christmas. After this, black Angus cattle became more popular throughout Great Britain.

4. They’re Known for Superior Quality Beef

The black Angus is mainly used for beef due to its excellent quality, including a distinct marbling and rich flavor and texture. The average animal can produce enough meat for 1,500 quarter-pound hamburgers. Their hide is used for various leather products, and in all, producers can utilize about 98% of a cow's body.
