Options for Replacing Old Cows
In the cow/calf business there is one thing that will always occur...all cows will reach retirement age. A good cow will raise 8-10 calves in her lifetime and then she will need to be replaced. Old cows usually decline in productivity, thus not weaning a big enough calf to make the beef producer money. Following are several options for replacing cows in your herd.
There should be two goals with replacements:
1. Select the breed or breed type that fits your genetic plan.
2. Select a productive female that will raise big calves………..producers sell weight!
Producers have been successful using any of the above options. Choose the plan that fits your long-term herd goals. This investment will affect your herd productivity for up to 10 years.
