Rural homeowners rely on their septic tanks to safely treat and dispose of wastewater and ensure a clean, sanitary household. While regular maintenance and upkeep can help your septic system last for years, systems do need to be replaced from time to time. You can tell when a new septic installation is needed by being aware of some of the common signs of a failing tank; a few of these signs are discussed below.

How to Tell If You Need a New Septic Tank

1. Pipes Are Routinely Backing Up

Raw sewage backing up out of drains is never pleasant. It comes with an unmistakably foul odor, and it can release physical contaminants into the air, potentially making your indoor air unhealthy to breathe. An occasional septic backup may just mean that you need to have your tank pumped. But regular backups are a sign that something is wrong with the system's operation and a new septic installation may be needed. Other indicators of septic backups include gurgling noises coming from drains, slow-draining water, and less-powerful flushing action in toilets.

2. There Is Standing Water in the Yard

When a septic system is working as it should, it releases treated wastewater into the drain field, where it is absorbed into the ground. If you notice puddles in the drain field and it has not rained recently, it could be a sign that the septic system cannot efficiently dispose itself of wastewater. In addition to standing water in your yard, you may also notice pipes backing up as described above.

3. The Grass Has Gotten Much Greener

A failing septic tank and drain field will often release more moisture into the soil, and this can make the grass overtop noticeably greener. The brighter colored grass may also grow faster than the grass on the rest of your lawn. This is because a failing septic tank can push sewage in wastewater closer to the surface of the ground, essentially serving as a fertilizer that makes grass grow at a quicker rate. If you see an influx of new, vibrant grass around your tank or drain field, contact a septic installation professional for an inspection.
