For many people, building their own home containing custom features and premium materials is their dream. Understanding the process behind its construction will help you follow the requirements and plan for any eventualities. This guide goes over the steps involved, from excavation to the final touches, so you know what to expect before you start.

A Guide to the Home Construction Process

1. Preparing the Site

Before work begins, the site must be surveyed and staked to map out the blueprint design. An excavation crew will dig out the area where the foundation will be poured to ensure the structure has an even, firm base. Excavation equipment such as backhoes may also be needed to dig beds for pipes. After this, holes must be dug for the footings that will support the building, and wooden forms are constructed to contain the concrete foundation.

2. Pouring the Foundation

Your contractors will pour concrete into the footing holes and the wooden forms. Once the concrete has cured and dried, a waterproofing membrane is added to keep the structure dry during and after construction.

3. Raising the Frame

After building the foundation, the lumber frame must be raised to provide support for the final structure. Walls, roof trusses, and decking are installed, followed by the window and door frames. At this stage, the building will start to take on a more recognizable shape.

4. Adding Roofing, Siding & Utility Installation

With the framing in place, your contractor can then mount roofing materials, exterior walls, and utility equipment such as wiring, HVAC ducting, fireplaces, plumbing supply and drainage lines, and other systems.

5. Insulating & Decorating

Once the exterior has been completed, insulation can be installed between the wall studs and between the floor joists in the attic. Gaps around window and door frames are sealed at this time to keep moisture out and conditioned air in.

6. Exterior Finishes

After all of this is done, you can add finishing touches such as windows and doors, attic vents, exterior paint or decoration, and driveways, walkways, and other hardscaping features.
