SSU statement regarding Orange Crush event
Throughout the year, our students attend any number of local activities and festivals. While some Savannah State students likely attended Orange Crush, the event is neither sponsored nor condoned by the university nor any student organization. In fact, the Division of Student Affairs actively discouraged attendance at this particular event.
Though Savannah State students were not a large part of the problem (estimates indicate less than 20 percent of the student body attended), we are proud that our Marine Science Club students — approximately 15 — stepped up to be part of the solution by organizing a beach clean-up session for Sunday morning. We commend them for taking the initiative and demonstrating responsible behavior that we seek to instill in all of our students.
In keeping with the spirit of kinship and community, Savannah State administrators, faculty and staff have also reached out to Tybee Island officials and residents to offer support and assistance moving forward. Savannah State University will continue to strive to be a good neighbor to Tybee Island and a good steward of its beautiful beaches.
