Water heaters provide consistent hot water for cooking, bathing, and cleaning, making them an essential piece of equipment in your home. These appliances can develop problems that interfere with your supply. Below are signs it may be time to call a plumber for repairs.

What Are Some Problems With Hot Water Heaters?

1. A Leak

One of the easiest signs of an issue is a leak near your water heater. There are a few reasons why water pools around the base of the tank, and a plumber can diagnose it if a visual inspection doesn’t show anything.

Usually, a broken drain valve will lead to water coming out as well as too much pressure in the tank that needs to release. The tank may also be corroded or rusted, leading to holes, or there is too much condensation from the water vapor that occurs during a gas water heater’s combustion process.

2. Cold Water

When your water never gets hot, your pilot light may be out, which can be remedied by simply relighting it. If that isn’t the reason, there may be an issue with the heating element in your system that should be looked at by a plumbing expert. Parts may be damaged or broken and need replacing.

3. Unreliable Supply

If you find yourself running out of hot water, the thermostat may be misreading and shutting down your supply too soon. Too hot or too cold water can mean a malfunctioning thermostat as well or the heating element needs repairs or a replacement.  In some cases, nothing is malfunctioning; you just don’t have a big enough tank.

A plumber can help you figure out what size you need for your household and install a new system. Sediment buildup in your tank can also interfere with temperatures. Attach a hose to the drain valve and open a hot water tap nearest to the water heater. Open the drain valve, let the water drain, and then turn on the cold tap to stir up and remove the rest of the sediment.

4. Colored Water

Water should be clean and clear, but if you see a rusty supply, your tank may be corroding. Usually, this means the anode rod inside is failing. This component prevents rust by attracting the ions in the water that lead to rust. Anode rods usually last between three and five years, and one older than that will not do its job.
