Showerheads come in all shapes and sizes, providing a constant stream of water and increasing the ease of getting clean. While they’re fairly simple to operate, it can be difficult to determine when to secure a replacement. Knowing what to look for should help to simplify the process, so take a closer look at the following to become familiar with the basics.

4 Signs You Need a New Showerhead

1. Water Pressure

One of the first features you might notice is a change in water pressure. This usually occurs when the showerhead reaches the end of its life span and either comes loose or obstructs the flow. Try performing a minor adjustment, such as tightening the connection. If the pressure continues to grow weaker, then it might be time for an upgrade.

2. Visible Leaks

Showerheads should maintain a tight seal around the entire fixture. Leaks that appear along the rim while the water is running will risk increasing your utility costs. Those that continue to drip when the system is off indicate that there’s internal damage that either requires repair or a complete replacement.

3. Sediment Buildup

Hard water is when there’s a high concentration of minerals in the water supply. It causes tiny particulates to pass through the system and collect on nearby surfaces, including the inside of your showerhead. Over time, this could create a clog that reduces functionality and requires immediate repair.

4. Mold Growth

Mold thrives in areas that are dark and damp. If it develops in or around the showerhead, then chances are that tiny spores will filter into the water and come out with the flow. This can detract from the health of the home, so keep an eye out for visible black spots.
