A tractor is the backbone of any farm, so if yours breaks down, it can create numerous roadblocks in your operations. Rather than paying for repeat repairs, recognize when it’s time for a replacement. Purchasing a new or used piece of farm equipment will save you time and energy, so pay attention to the following issues.

When You Should Purchase a New Tractor

1. Knocking Engine Sounds

If the engine emits a knocking sound when fired up or operating, it may need new pistons, a fuel injector, or a starter. This issue can develop from poor maintenance and age. The engine may knock and seize if parts are damaged and striking the engine block, an issue common in gasoline and diesel tractors.

2. Faulty Clutch

The clutch allows you to change gears on the tractor when you need additional power or to reverse. If it begins to stick, is difficult to move, or makes loud squealing noises, the parts have likely been damaged. While clutch systems are expensive to replace, you can buy a new tractor to quickly being operations again.

3. Mounting Repairs

4. It Doesn’t Serve Your Needs

Expanding to larger farm operations may mean that your old tractor can’t complete tasks as efficiently as a newer, bigger machine can. You may need to upgrade your row crop tractor to an orchard tractor if you begin harvesting fruit instead of corn.

Starting a fresh crop on a hill may require investing in a tractor with a rotary tiller attachment—something an older utility tractor may not be able to do. You may also find you’re doing a lot of earthmoving and require equipment with front buckets and towing attachments. Regardless, if your current tractor can’t get the job done, you may need a new piece of farm equipment.
