Mowing doesn’t just make your yard attractive; it also keeps the grass lush, healthy, and weed-free the entire season. If you want to increase the visual appeal of your property, follow these tips when grooming your yard with a lawn mower.

Do:

Take off one-third of the blade at a time.

Mow regularly, cutting off only a little bit each time. This helps the lawn retain its moisture, stay attractive, and remain strong. Mow down to a height of three inches. When the blades grow to four inches, remove the tops of them.

Sharpen the blades.

lawn mowersThe lawn mower’s blades dull during use, and a dull blade cutting at the grass will tear at and stress your lawn. Grass that is frayed at the end from a dull blade will lose its moisture quickly and is susceptible to disease.

Take your blades in at the beginning of the year for sharpening, and sharpen a couple of times throughout the season if needed.

Don’t:

Mow wet grass.

Wet grass doesn’t cut evenly. The wet clippings will clump up both inside the mower and on the lawn itself, smothering the grass. Wait until your lawn is dry, but avoid mowing during the hottest part of the day. The grass will wilt in extreme heat and is more susceptible to damage. Mow either in the early evening or in the morning.

Bag your clippings.

The top third of the grass provides excellent mulching without smothering the lawn.  Remove the bag from your mower, letting your clippings fall right back into the lawn. As they decompose, they’ll release nutrients into the soil and lock in moisture to protect against the summer heat.
