Tractors haul farming equipment, carry crops back from the field, and power other machinery. However, they can also be dangerous, especially if they haven’t been properly maintained. Whether you use a tractor for farming or odd jobs around your property, below are a few tips for using your equipment safely.

3 Common Tractor Hazards

1. Rolling Over

Due to their top-heavy design and the massive torque they produce, tractors are prone to rollovers. If the tractor is overloaded, it might tip to the rear, or the entire vehicle can roll over sideways on an incline or sharp turn.

tractorTo avoid rear rollovers, never drive your vehicle up a steep hill, and avoid accelerating too quickly. You should also take turns slowly and avoid driving on steep inclines to keep the tractor from rolling over sideways.

2. Falling From the Vehicle

Driving over bumpy terrain can cause sudden, unpredictable shifts that can eject people from the tractor, even at low speeds. Whenever you’re driving, always wear your seatbelt, and don’t let passengers crowd into the vehicle.

Children are especially vulnerable to falling, so keep young kids away from your equipment or make sure they’re buckled in securely.

3. Injuring Another Person

Tractors offer a high vantage point, but it can be easy to miss someone walking behind or beside the vehicle. Unfortunately, tractors are heavy enough to cause serious injuries even at relatively low speeds.

Any time you’re driving a farm vehicle, keep an eye on the mirrors and make sure everyone knows to keep a safe distance while the vehicle is in motion.
