Leaks are the most common problems seen in air conditioners. Although a dripping unit will usually continue to function normally, it could lead to household water damage, reduced efficiency, and a need for urgent repairs. Here are a few causes behind AC leaks to help you better understand when it’s time to call an air conditioning contractor for help.

Why Your Air Conditioning Unit is Leaking Water

1. Clogged Condensate Drain Line

Condensate, the moisture that accumulates as an AC unit cools warm air, must be able to evacuate the system to prevent fungi and algae growth. If the condensate drain pipe becomes blocked with dust, dirt, or other substances, the water can back up into the unit or rupture the line, causing a leak.

There are multiple ways to remove a clog, such as using a wet-dry vacuum or flushing the channel with bleach or vinegar. However, an air conditioning contractor will achieve the best results since they are properly trained and equipped to repair or replace this important feature.

2. Dirty Air Filter

Air conditioning filters collect dust and other contaminants as cooled air passes into and out of the AC unit. Over time, the screen will become clogged, restricting airflow and trapping cold air around the evaporator coils. These parts will freeze, and as they warm up during operation, the frozen moisture will thaw and leak out, forming puddles under the unit. Avoid this issue by checking your filter periodically and replacing it every three months or as needed.

3. Damaged or Missing Drain Pan

An AC unit’s drain pan is located beneath the evaporator coils and catches condensate. This component can gradually rust or break down with use, developing cracks that allow water to drip out into your home. Check beneath the device to ensure that the tray is in place, and inspect for fractures, gaps, or holes.
