Regular oil changes are an essential maintenance task for your vehicle. Clean engine oil helps control temperatures, minimize wear and tear, and prevent serious problems down the road. Below are a few common problems skipping your regular oil change can cause.

Why You Should Get Regular Oil Changes

1. Overheating

Engines create an enormous amount of heat, which can damage components and even crack the block itself. Engine oil minimizes friction, reducing the amount of heat the coolant system has to control.

Old, dirty lubricant becomes more viscous with time and picks up metal flakes and other particulates. As your oil ages, friction heat inside the engine may rise to dangerous levels. Overheating can cause head gaskets to blow, warp pistons, and could completely destroy the engine.

2. Increased Wear

Excessive friction wears down moving parts, decreasing their lifespan and triggering unpredictable breakdowns. The pistons and valves will quickly wear out, along with other vital parts deep inside the engine.

As it breaks down, old oil also creates acidic compounds that accelerate corrosion and wear. Skipping a few oil changes can result in much larger issues and more expensive repair bills later.

3. Decreased Performance

Aging oil creates carbon deposits that can clog air and gas valves, disrupting the balance of fuel in the combustion chamber. As a result, your car will likely run hotter and louder, which puts even more pressure on delicate components.

Along with higher emissions, you may also notice decreased fuel efficiency. These problems will likely only get worse until you invest in an oil change and have deposits cleaned out of your engine.
