3. Weather Conditions Vary Dramatically

According to Polynesian legend, the demigod Maui and his mother Hina lived under the rule of the sun god, La. She complained about this to Maui, who proceeded to create a coconut fiber rope and climb to the top of Haleakala to wait for La to produce light. Maui then lassoed La with the rope, tied the sun god to a tree, and ordered him to create more light each day in exchange for his release. La agreed, and the rest is history.
