When you're vacationing in Hawaii, having easy access to water activities will make your days fun and fulfilling. Outside of dolphin adventures and boat tours, learning how to surf provides vigorous exercise while enhancing your appreciation for the ocean. As you get started, here are a few tips to develop your new skills.

4 Tips for Beginner Surfers

1. Take a Lesson

Professionals surfers make riding waves look easy, but remember the process takes practice and time. Instead of buying a board and taking your chances, start your surf adventures by enrolling in a group lesson. An instructor will walk you through the techniques, from paddling to getting up on the board, as well as etiquette and how to catch a wave. These crucial building blocks will make those first few outings in the water easier.

2. Start With a Big Board

With more surface area and volume, a bigger board will make it easier to catch your first few waves. You can then practice your paddling technique, pop up to the standing position, and maintain stability as you ride.

3. Choose Your Surf Spot Wisely

When you first start surfing, safety is paramount. Look for surf spots known for mild waves ideal for beginners. When in doubt, ask your surf instructor for recommendations. By choosing a location with other beginners and smaller waves, you can practice the fundamentals.

As with any water activity, there is proper etiquette to respect other surfers and keep one another safe. Wait your turn and keep enough distance between you and other surfers looking to catch a wave.

4. Surf With a Buddy

In the early days, it's easy to get discouraged when you only catch a wave or two during a surf session. To remain motivated, find a friend who's willing to surf with you. Having them at your side will keep you safe and accounted for, plus you'll both develop a regular water activity routine and can celebrate all the progress you're making.
