If you're planning a vacation, you might have Hawaii's tropical beauty and rich cultural history in mind. A luau is a traditional activity that makes time in paradise even more special and magical. Here's more about its origins if you're curious about this event and plan to add it to your itinerary.

What is the History of Hawaiian Luaus?

1. An Event For Everyone

Some 200 years ago, men and women in Hawaii were not permitted to eat together, as it was "kapu," meaning forbidden. Strict rules separated the working class from the ruling class and regulated who commoners could dine with and what foods they could eat. Delicacies such as bananas, pork, and reef fish, for example, were exclusive to royals.

Everything changed in 1819 when King Kamehameha II rejected religious traditions that separated men from women and commoners from royalty. The king welcomed everyone to his gatherings, which were the first luaus. People ate off lauhalas, which are mats created from woven ti leaves, and did not use utensils.

2. “Enough to Feed a King”

Kamehameha II's sizable dinners became popular quickly, resulting in the phrase "enough to feed a king" due to the large quantities of food provided. One event featured 2,245 coconuts, 1,820 fish, and 271 hogs. The king's 50th birthday celebration required attendees to eat in shifts of 50 due to the 1,500 people present.

In addition to traditional fare, these inclusive events featured stunning natural decor made of tropical flowers, ferns, and leaves that often served as "platters" for the food, as well as games. 'Ulu maika was a popular game similar to lawn bowling.

3. The Modern Version

By the 1950s and '60s, travel to Hawaii spiked, and luaus became popular tourist events. They combined traditional food with hula dancing that included fire and plenty of hip movements. Hula dancing is a Polynesian art form but has become synonymous with Hawaiian events. These extravaganzas continue to provide tourists and residents with delicious traditional food and exciting entertainment that create beautiful memories.
