When planning activities for your vacation to Hawaii, you don’t want to exclude the beautiful hikes that can introduce you to the islands’ many ecosystems. But on Maui there are so many that it’s hard to narrow it down. Here are a few top favorites to help make your decision easier.
Where to Find Unforgettable Hikes on Maui
1. Ke Ala Loa O Maui Trail
In North Maui, off the Hana highway, you can find a hiking trail with easy access to black sand beaches and grand ocean views. The Waianapanapa Coastal Trail, or Ke Ala Loa O Maui Trail, starts at the beach in Waianapanapa State Park and follows the fields around the coast. It extends in both directions from the beach and features many unique rock formations. Less than two miles long, this trail makes for a fun addition to a day of beach activities.
2. Haleakala’s Sliding Sands Trail
Located within Haleakala National Park, this 10-mile trail is an advanced experience that dips into the Haleakala crater near the mountain’s summit. The hike starts at 10,000 feet of elevation, goes for six miles through the crater basin to about 7,500 feet, and then continues down to Paliku cabin, where you can access another trail that leads down to 300 feet of elevation. Keep in mind that if you decide to turn back, most of the return trip will be uphill.
3. ‘Iao Valley State Park
This 4,000-acre state park has numerous beginner-friendly hiking trails that offer stunning ways of experiencing the lush forest and native flora and fauna. Many are even paved, making them more accessible than other hikes, and there are plenty of waterfalls and swimming holes to visit along the trails. This state park is also the site of the Battle of Kepaniwai, a major event in Hawaiian history.
4. Waihi Ridge Trail
Another perfect trail for experienced hikers, the Waihi Ridge Trial extends five miles through the West Maui mountains and gains 1,500 feet in elevation on the way up. As the name suggests, part of the trail is on a ridge along the crest of the mountain range. This hike offers views of Waihee Valley, the Pacific Ocean, and the neighboring island of Lana’i.
5. Nakalele Blowhole
Combining magnificent ocean views, unique geological features, and ample opportunities to see Hawaiian wildflowers, this park contains many trails that all lead to the Nakalele Blowhole: one of seven natural blowholes in Hawaii, where ocean water sprays up to 100 feet in the air. Although all the paths are about a mile long, the slippery stone trails can be a difficult hike for young children, the elderly, and people with mobility issues.
