Many visitors to Hawaii are delighted when they are joined on boat tours by pods of friendly dolphins. The warm waters of Maui are home to hundreds of the marine mammals, and whether you opt for a dolphin adventure cruise specifically in search of them or happen to spot some during a dinner cruise, you're sure to be impressed by their grace and entertaining antics. Three species of dolphin call Hawaii home, so keep an eye out for them when you spend time on the water.

The Most Common Dolphins in Hawaii

1. Bottlenose

Bottlenose dolphins are common, and what most people think of when they think of dolphins. The largest of the species at 7 to 11 feet long, these playful and intelligent animals are often found in aquariums, on television, and in movies, making them the most identifiable species. Although they typically travel in pods of up to 30, it's estimated that several thousand bottlenose dolphins call Hawaii home. They communicate with each other using a series of clicks and whistles through their blowholes, as well as through body language like leaping from the water and slapping their tails on the surface.

Bottlenose dolphins are very playful, and can often be found "surfing" in front of boat tours or riding the pressure waves created by humpback whales.

2. Spinner

boat tours

Boat tours in Hawaii often sail in search of the unique Hawaiian spinner dolphins. Much smaller than bottlenose dolphins at 5-6 feet long, they also have a much smaller dorsal fin than other species. What makes them especially delightful to boat tour guests is their habit of jumping out of the water and spinning up to seven times in the air before diving back under the waves.

Spinner dolphins are nocturnal feeders and usually spend the night in deep water hunting for squid and other food sources. During the day, they return to shallower water in coves and bays to rest and play. They are very social with people and boat tours.

3. Spotted

Pan tropical spotted dolphins, also called kiko, are distinguishable from other species by the dark "cape" on their head that runs to the dorsal fin, and the spots they develop in adulthood. About the same size as spinner dolphins, these friendly dolphins are known for their ability to leap 15 feet or more out of the water, delighting boat tour guests. Unfortunately, their numbers have dwindled due to their habit of traveling with schools of yellowfin tuna, which causes them to get caught in nets.
