With clear water teeming with a variety of undersea life, Maui is known for snorkeling tours among both visitors and locals. Although there’s plenty to see underwater almost anywhere around the island, a few spots stand out and are especially worth exploring.

Where to Snorkel on Maui

1. Molokini Crater

Just a few miles from the coast of Maui, Molokini Crater (also known as Molokini Islet) is a volcanic atoll with a protected inner cove ideal for snorkeling tours. Designated a Marine Conservation area, the crater is only accessible by boat. The crystal clear waters allow you to see an abundance of wildlife, including colorful fish, manta rays, and turtles.

2. Black Rock

At the northern end of Ka‘anapali Beach lies Black Rock, a rock formation popular among cliff divers. It’s also a hotspot for snorkeling since the cliffs provide some protection from the waves.

Black Rock is easily accessible from the beach or by car. Expect to see plenty of coral and colorful fish in this spot. Stick around for the evening torch lighting ceremony when torches are lit along the beach to the top of the cliff, where the torch lighters jump into the ocean.

3. Maluaka Beach

You’re likely to spot turtles in this area while exploring the many coral arches, as it serves as a “cleaning station.” Turtles come here to get cleaned by smaller sea life living in the coral, and it’s common to see many crowding around the same area at once.

4. Coral Gardens

Only accessible by boat, this is another popular location for snorkeling tours thanks to the abundance of turtles in the area. Located in the shadow of the Pali, the coastal cliffs that run from Ukumehame and Papalaua to Ma‘alaea, the area has several prime snorkeling spots that an experienced guide can show you.

5. Honolua Bay

When there isn’t much swell on the north side of Maui, Honolua Bay provides a sheltered, calm spot for snorkeling. Although it’s accessible from shore, it’s much easier to get to the bay by boat. Because the water near the shore tends to be a bit murky,  you’ll see more by snorkeling from a boat further out.
