Hardwood is one of the most durable flooring materials available, which makes it a popular choice for kitchen remodeling projects. However, despite its strength, it requires special care to stay in good shape. This guide covers several effective methods for protecting kitchen hardwood floors.

How to Protect Hardwood Kitchen Floors

1. Clean Frequently

Tiny particles of dust, debris, and dirt tend to accumulate between hardwood floorboards. This may not seem like a big concern, but the small particles can wear down the finish and damage the flooring. Moisture is also a major concern in kitchens since spills are common.

Prevent damage by sweeping the floors daily and using absorbent cloths to wipe up spills as soon as they occur. If you let accidents linger, colored liquids may leave unsightly stains; moisture can also seep into the wooden boards and cause warping. Clean, dry hardwood will last longer than surfaces that aren't well-cared for.

2. Use Furniture Pads

Even strong hardwood can get scratched, dented, or gouged from furniture. You can accidentally damage boards any time you slide pieces across the surface. Prevent unsightly scuffs by placing felt pads on the bottoms of table and chair legs. The material acts as a buffer between the furniture and flooring. Pads can absorb the weight of heavy items, keeping dents from forming underneath furniture that doesn't get moved frequently.

3. Utilize Area Rugs

No one wants to completely cover their beautiful hardwood floors, but a few well-placed area rugs can keep your kitchen floors in great shape. They are affordable and chic solutions for preserving hardwood flooring.

Consider putting mats in high-traffic areas, such as in front of the sink, by doorways leading in or out of the room or house, or beneath the kitchen table. You can also put small rugs near the stove, refrigerator, or dishwasher to ward off water damage.
