Cold and flu season isn’t fun for anyone, but it can be especially troubling for seniors. Though the flu virus can cause serious health problems for those with chronic conditions or weakened immune systems, there are some simple ways to limit the chances of contracting it. If you’re in charge of elderly care for a loved one, keep the following tips in mind this season.

How to Keep Seniors Safe From the Flu

1. Get Vaccinated

Each year, doctors' offices and pharmacies offer flu shots throughout fall and winter. These are generally covered by insurance and are safe for anyone without a history of serious allergies. Both seniors and their caregivers should consider getting vaccinated as early in the season as possible. However, vaccines do not eliminate the need for other precautions since they do not fully eliminate flu risk.

2. Clean & Sanitize

Flu germs can live on hands and other surfaces before traveling to the respiratory system. Wash hands regularly with soap and water for about 20 seconds to kill the virus and avoid touching your face. Around your loved one’s home, sanitize frequently touched surfaces like countertops, bathroom fixtures, doorknobs, and smartphones regularly.

3. Stay Away From People Who Are Sick

The virus can also spread from person to person, so avoid spending time with anyone who is actively sick. However, some individuals may carry it without exhibiting symptoms, so seniors and their caregivers should avoid big crowds or unnecessary gatherings throughout the season since there’s a decent chance someone could be sick.

4. Live a Healthy Lifestyle

The immune system is generally supported by exercise and a healthy diet. There’s no magic pill or step to make anyone immune from the flu, but leading a healthy lifestyle can make serious side effects less likely. For seniors, simple activities like walking or swimming may help. Additionally, eat a well-balanced diet or have your loved one take nutritional supplements for the vitamins or minerals lacking in their diet.
