A dead power outlet can be extremely frustrating, but it might also indicate serious issues with your electrical system. Some problems might be fairly simple to correct, but others may call for the specialized skill of a professional electrical services provider. Below are some of the most common reasons your outlets might suddenly stop delivering electricity.

What Are Common Problems With Power Outlets?

1. Defective Device

Before worrying about the electrical outlet, make sure the device you’re plugging in is working properly. Examine the cord for frays or other signs of damage. If you don't see any, try plugging it in somewhere else first to see if it works in that outlet.

2. Tripped Circuit Breaker

If several outlets and lights are affected, the problem may be a tripped circuit breaker. These devices shut off the flow of electricity if they detect a power surge. This could mean you have too many appliances plugged into the same circuit.

Check the service panel to see whether any of the breakers are in the “off” position. If so, turning them back on should restore electricity to your outlets. You should also rearrange appliances to reduce strain on any one particular circuit.

One tripped circuit breaker usually doesn’t point to severe problems, but hire an electrician to inspect the system if this is a recurring issue.

3. Tripped Ground Fault Circuit Interrupter Outlet

Ground fault circuit interrupters (GFCIs) outlets have built-in circuit breakers that automatically shut down if they detect power surges or water leaks. This can prevent dangerous shocks and electrical fires, which makes them essential equipment in bathrooms and kitchens.

Many homeowners don’t realize that GFCIs are usually wired to standard receptacles, so a tripped device will shut down other outlets on the circuit. Check the other outlets for “test” and “reset” buttons, and try pressing each. If the “reset” button pops out immediately, there’s likely a dangerous current running through the circuit.

4. Loose or Burned-Out Connections

A faulty connection or power surge inside the outlet can burn out wires, leaving the receptacle unable to deliver power. A burned-out outlet can be dangerous, allowing electricity to flow into your walls and potentially starting a fire.

Loose connections inside the outlet box can also cause it to suddenly die. An outlet with loose connections can cause shorts, sparks, and other potentially dangerous conditions, so have it checked by an electrical services technician immediately.
