Glass windows provide natural lighting and an outside view while protecting homes from cold temperatures and poor weather conditions. However, if windows aren't properly insulated, they become less effective and may fog up. Here are some of the primary causes of this issue and how to solve them.

Why Are Your Glass Windows Foggy?

1. Condensation

You might notice that your windows tend to fog up during the night and on cold winter days. When the air outside is colder than the air inside, glass windows will be cooler. The warm indoor air, which holds more moisture than cold air, will come into contact with the window and rapidly cool down. Because it can no longer contain its moisture, it leaves behind a layer of fog.

There are a few simple ways to prevent this. First, windows can't fog up if there's low moisture content in the air, so consider purchasing a dehumidifier. Next, try turning on your fans to prevent warm air from sticking to the windows. Finally, if you apply a window film kit, you can block warm air from touching the surface completely.

2. Worn or Broken Seal

Try cleaning the windows inside and out. If they're still foggy, a worn or damaged seal is likely to blame. Luckily, glass window technicians can easily fill any cracks or gaps.

3. Cracks in the Pane

Most windows today consist of two or three glass panes to prevent heat transfer between the inside and outside of your home. However, just one small crack in one of these panes can compromise the effect, allowing in moisture and causing the windows to fog more easily. A glass repair technician will be able to find and seal the crack, or replace the glass pane if the damage is widespread.
