When it comes to protecting your loved ones and property, security systems are always good investments. Thanks to a variety of sensors, cameras, and alarms, it can alert you when something is amiss on your property. However, if you have pets, they can sometimes accidentally trigger a false alarm when you're not home. Here's how to keep this from happening.

How to Prevent Pets From Causing a False Alarm

1. Get the Right Sensors

If your security system has basic motion sensors, they will generally flag any activity that comes across their paths. Therefore, any time a dog runs across a room or a cat leaps onto the counter, an alarm might be set off as though there's an intruder in the house. Many cameras act as motion sensors, too, so the same issue can occur.

Thankfully, there are pet-friendly devices that can spot the difference either in size or even temperature between an animal and a human. Many of these devices are programmed so that the infrared operates at a lower pulse count, which means smaller animals won't be big enough to trigger the sensor. These aren't always the default devices that come with a security system, so you'll need to ask your provider about them.

2. Place Cameras and Sensors Strategically

In addition to getting pet-friendly cameras and sensors, they must be in the right spot. Placing them at the top of a wall in a corner will ensure they capture the broadest range of each space.

If they're too low or at certain angles, not only will you get most of what your pet is doing instead of a human, but you'll also likely have blind spots. In addition to placement within each room, installing sensors on all the windows and doors that can be accessed from the exterior is an effective strategy, as these are the more likely points of entry.

3. Invest in Monitoring

While all security systems can register suspicious activity, some rely on your vigilance to follow up. If there's something strange, it's up to you to tell the authorities.

Therefore, if you're not checking the activity in real time, you may not know when it's your pet or an intruder that sets off an alarm. When you have a monitored security system, a third party will notify you and give you a chance to check your camera to confirm if it was your pet before sending the authorities to your home.
