A Brief Guide to Carbon Monoxide Detectors
By Horizon
When most homeowners consider installing security systems, they think of theft-deterring solutions like window and door sensors, alarms, and panic buttons. It can be all too easy to overlook the importance of carbon monoxide (CO) detectors, which are just as crucial for keeping your household safe. Here is what you need to know about how these devices work and the benefits of including one in your overall security system.
How They Work
There are two main types of carbon monoxide detectors, and each one works slightly differently. An electrochemical detector contains a sensor housed in a gas-permeable compartment. If CO is present in the air, it enters the compartment, where a chemical reaction occurs. This reaction causes a surge in electrical current, which sets off an alarm.
A metal oxide detector uses circuitry, rather than a chemical reaction, to sound the alarm. When CO meets the microchip in the unit's sensor, it lowers electrical resistance. The change in resistance triggers the alarm to alert you to the presence of CO in the air.
Benefits
CO is a colorless, tasteless, and odorless gas. It is a byproduct of the combustion process, so any fuel-burning appliances, systems, tools, or vehicles have the ability to create it. This includes gas furnaces, dryers, fireplaces, and stoves, as well as vehicles. CO is toxic, and without a detector, you won't know of its presence until certain health symptoms are experienced. At low concentrations, this can mean nausea and headache; at higher concentrations or prolonged exposure, it can cause unconsciousness and death.
Investing in a CO detector as part of your security system will keep your family safe. Detectors are often able to pick up on trace amounts of the gas and alert you to danger early, so you can take the necessary precautions. You should leave the home immediately and contact the local fire department or gas utility company. If anyone in the home is experiencing symptoms, seek immediate medical attention. Once the fire department or gas company has found the cause of the leak, you can work with your HVAC provider to fix the problem until the home is safe again. Without a CO detector, none of this would be possible.
