The summer slide is a very real phenomenon and typically accounts for significant learning loss while kids are home during the summer months. However, with schools being canceled across the country due to COVID-19, your child may need even more help from you and tutors to prepare for class this fall. Here are three ways to ward off the summer slide and help your child get ready for school again.

Tips for Beating the COVID-19 Summer Slide

1. Focus on the Foundations

Instead of centering your at-home lessons around specific material, start by locking down your student’s foundational skills.  Read with your child daily, and focus on foundational math principles.  So many student’s struggle in higher level math courses because these basic math concepts have been ignored and forgotten.  Once your child is able to obtain the right answers to simple addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division problems, then start to see if you can increase their speed.  Sometimes we need to move backward before we can move forward.

2. Hire a Tutor

tutorsFind a tutor for your child before they head back to school, and schedule regular visits. Weekly sessions allow students to develop a routine and stay ahead of the curve.  Students that seek out a tutor tend to be more comfortable asking questions which leads to more overall understanding down the road.

3. Make a Plan for Tackling Curriculum

Be proactive, and talk with your child’s school about getting a copy of the curriculum. Make a plan with your child and their tutor to work ahead of the curve. By exposing kids early on to new learning concepts, they can feel comfortable in their classes and become leaders in their learning environments.
