Nothing pulls a room together like a beautiful, high-quality rug. Persian rugs, in particular, are known for their beauty, complexity, and uniqueness. However, you may be wondering where these now-popular pieces of decor came from and how they made their way into the mainstream. The following guide offers a brief history of these accent rugs so you can have a better appreciation for them.

Where Did Persian Rugs Come From?

The country we now know as Iran did not always have this name. Up until 1935, it was known as Persia, which is where these rugs originated. The first rug is believed to have been created over 2,500 years ago.

Although these mats are now used more as decorative accents than as a means to cover the floors, their original use was far more functionally focused. Tribe members created the first rugs to offer some solace from the cold, wet earth floors upon which their huts and homes were built. It wasn't until roughly 539 B.C., when Cyrus the Great discovered what the tribesmen had made, that Persian rugs became popular for their aesthetic beauty.

How Are Persian Rugs Made?

Although the technology may be more advanced, the process by which Persian rugs are made remains incredibly traditional. First, a sheep is shorn, and their wool is turned into thread. This material, which is dyed the desired color, is then woven into a beautiful rug using a loom.

The weaving process, however, is incredibly detailed. On average, it can take anywhere from a few months to years to complete a project, depending on the intricacy of its design. It isn't uncommon to include complex symbols and shapes to help convey a particular mood, story, or idea. Once the rug is finished, it is washed to get rid of any excess dye and laid out in natural light to dry.
