If you use a riding lawn mower in your work, or at home, you know it is an essential piece of equipment that needs to stay in good condition. However, it will experience problems from time to time, just like any other engine-based machinery. Learn how to troubleshoot the most common issues using the guide below to get your lawn equipment working again quickly.

Troubleshooting Guide for Riding Lawn Tractors

1. Engine Won't Spin Over to Start

If you try to crank the engine, but it won't turn over to start, there may be an issue with the battery. Keep the battery in good shape by recharging it, especially in the off season, at low amps for at least 20 hours at a time.

If you're still experiencing the same problem with a freshly charged battery, then it's time for a new one. Batteries for this type of lawn equipment usually last about three years before they lose the ability to hold a full charge.

2. Smoke From the Engine

An oily-smelling blue smoke coming from the engine could mean that your air filter is clogged. This pressure buildup forces oil past the piston rings, which burns off as smoke. Change your oil yearly or per your manufactures hour recommendation.

Replace your air filter every year or no more than 100 hrs or immediately after seeing smoke. Your maintenance team may also want to check your spark plug for oil fouling that may indicate an issue with the piston rings or engine breather vent.

3. Overheating Engine

Grass and other debris can clog the cooling fins. This blocks airflow, which is needed to carry heat out of the engine. With engine off, clean the cooling fins and screen above the flywheel every day and check them first if you notice your engine temperature rising. Remember most small engines on outdoor power equipment are air cooled. If the fins are clear, it may be time for an oil change. Clean oil is necessary to clean and lubricate moving parts and generally needs to be changed every 50 to 100 hours of use.
