Light-colored carpets are beautiful and versatile, but they can be easily stained. Whether a pet didn’t make it outside in time or a guest spilled their drink, certain stains can be nearly impossible to remove. Fortunately, with the right carpet cleaning know-how, you may be able to save your floors.

Carpet Cleaning Tactics to Remove Tough Stains

1. Blood

The proteins in blood act as a binder, making the substance stick to carpet fibers. If blood isn’t cleaned up fast, it can stain carpets a rusty brown. Use cold water to rinse away as much as possible. Hot water will cause the stain to set. Next, use an enzyme-based cleaner to break down the proteins and remove the blood. Cleansers designed for pet mess removal often work well.

2. Pet Stains

Pet urine is highly acidic and, if not addressed promptly, can bleach the carpet and leave a yellow tint. Blot as much of the urine as possible with a paper towel. Then, apply baking soda, which will absorb the rest of the liquid, neutralize the acid, and mask any unpleasant odors. Leave the baking soda on for 15 minutes before vacuuming it up. This solution can also work for pet poop and vomit; just remove any solids before blotting.

3. Red Wine

Any colored drink can be challenging to get out of the carpet due to the dyes and pigments they contain. However, red wine is by far one of the worst culprits. Blot the surface liquid, then apply a solution of water and white wine vinegar. Scrub gently and apply a small amount at a time, working from the outside of the stain toward the center to avoid spreading it or damaging the carpet backing.

4. Ink & Nail Polish

An ink solvent or isopropyl alcohol can remove nail polish and ink stains, including those made by permanent markers. Isopropyl alcohol is in most nail polish removers. Brush the product into the carpet with a stiff-bristled brush and blot before rinsing with clean, warm water. Because alcohol may remove the carpet’s dye, test an inconspicuous spot first before applying it to the stained area. If it looks as though it will damage the fabric, call a carpet cleaning professional for help.
