What’s the Difference Between Shortboard & Longboard Surfing?
Surfing is a fun way to explore the ocean, get active, and make friends. If you’re new to the sport, you’ll need to find the right board. There are two main types: shortboards and longboards. Before heading to a surfboard shop, learn how the two compare to decide which one is right for you.
Longboards
Longboards are the original style. They’re typically made from a polyurethane or EPS foam core with a fiberglass shell and have one large fin at the tail end. This single fin creates a small drag, ideal for smooth conditions and slow turns. Because of its length—around 9 feet or longer— the board makes substantial contact with the water and allows for a wider stance and more stability. Its greater surface area also makes it easier to lie on your stomach and paddle. You can even sit out on the water and take in the sights. If you’re just starting out and aiming for small, gentle waves, most surfboard shops will recommend this board.
Shortboards
Shortboards range from 5 to 7 feet long and are also typically made from a polyurethane or EPS foam core with a fiberglass shell and has an upturned nose. Along the bottom are two, three, or four fins that stabilize the board and allow for more maneuverability. Coupled with an aerodynamic shape, this board is ideal for cutting through large waves at high speeds. You’ll be able to find your way into the pocket of a wave, where energy will propel you along its surface.
Because these boards are less buoyant, it’s easier to dive under waves (duck dive) with them. Generally, they're best for more advanced surfers who have mastered the basics, like catching a wave and riding it all the way in.
