If you don't need to use a vehicle for a lengthy period, you might consider renting a car storage unit. This convenient solution lets you protect it from elements like the sun and rain without sacrificing space on your property. Follow these tips to ensure it stays in good condition while you store it.

How to Maintain Your Car in Storage

1. Clean and Cover It

Messes and debris sitting on the car for a long period can cause stains or corrosion. For example, leaves trap water against metal parts and lead to rust, while dirt and grime in the interior discolor the seats and carpets.

Clean the automobile thoroughly inside and out before storing it, including washing any slush and road salt from the undercarriage to prevent corrosion. After parking the vehicle, protect it with a tarp or car cover that is correctly secured.

2. Avoid Wearing Out the Brakes

Typically, you set the parking brake to keep the car securely in place. However, leaving this component engaged can damage the braking system.

This action leads to the pads making contact with the rotors. If they remain in this position for weeks or months, they can begin to fuse. Using tire stoppers—also known as wheel chocks—will keep the vehicle in place during car storage without causing damage.

3. Take It Out Regularly

If a car sits still for too long, it can deteriorate. Tires will flatten, brakes will rust, and the battery can lose charge over time. Unused fuel will also go bad, congealing and damaging the fuel pump. To prevent all these problems, start up the vehicle at least once a week. Avoid leaving it idling in the car storage unit, as that can lead to carbon monoxide buildup. Instead, take it out for a brief spin.
