1. Change the Oil

Change the oil in your car right before you put it away. Old oil can contain moisture and residual acids, which would damage your engine if left over the winter.  

2. Remove the Battery 

If you are going to leave your vehicle in a storage unit for an extended period, take the battery out. Afterward, clean it with hot water and baking soda.

At home, leave the battery off the ground and in a dry location that won’t freeze. You can plug it into a trickle charger to send an electrical charge so the battery won’t die. 

3. Check Your Tires

Flat spotting occurs when a car has been inactive for a prolonged period. The tires will become flat where they’re touching the ground. To avoid this, you can either increase the tire pressure by filling them before storage, or lifting the car on a jack stand.  

4. Clean, Then Cover

Before storing your car, clean both its interior and exterior. Washing the car will prevent paint damage from leftover residue. Waxing will add an extra layer of protection.
