Gutters are crucial parts of your roofing system, responsible for diverting water away from your home, protecting the roof and foundation from damage, and shielding the windows and siding from leaks, stains, mold, and mildew. Unfortunately, they also tend to be overlooked when it comes to maintenance. To keep them in good condition and protect your home from damage, keep these do's and don'ts in mind.

Do:

Clean the gutters.

The most crucial part of gutter maintenance is keeping them clear of debris, so water can flow freely to the downspouts and away from your home. Gutters can quickly fill up with leaves, twigs, and dirt, so cleaning them at least twice a year in the spring and fall is necessary to ensure they work properly. Either hire a professional company to tackle the chore or do it yourself by clearing the debris by hand and flushing the channels with a hose.

Check for damage.

Over time, gutters can start to sag or pull away from the fascia boards. They can also develop cracks and leaks, so inspect them every few months for damage. For example, peeling paint or mold behind the gutters indicates that water isn't flowing correctly and you need repairs. While you're rinsing after a cleaning, watch for leaks in the joints as well. These can usually be fixed with some silicone caulk.

Don't:

Allow water under the shingles.

Avoid spraying water underneath the shingles on the edge of the roof when cleaning your gutters, as this can damage them and contribute to leaks. Set the spray nozzle on your garden hose so the spray isn't wider than the gutter channel, or invest in a nozzle designed for gutter cleaning.

Ignore the downspouts.

Wind and erosion can cause downspouts to move from their proper position. Ideally, they should direct water at least three to five feet away from the house to keep it from causing erosion or foundation damage. Also, don't forget to clear the downspouts, as water can back up into the gutters if they're clogged.
