Since the pandemic, many theaters have been shut down. As such, people have been looking for ways to improve their movie viewing experience at home. One big way to improve quality is with a home audio installation. There are several options available depending on the experience you want and your budget for an AV upgrade.

3 Fantastic Audio Options for the Home

1. Soundbar

As TVs have become slimmer, there is less room for speakers of any real quality. Compounding this is that most speakers are mounted at the rear of the television, so the sound must be bounced off a wall before it reaches the viewer.

A soundbar is a one-box solution that is on the easier end of home audio installation since it can be placed either on the wall or below the TV. The device comes with anywhere from two to five speakers and can have multiple channels, so you can customize your surround sound experience.

2. 5.1 Speaker Surround

Home Audio Installation

A 5.1 surround sound system is what most people think of when it comes to home audio installation. There are five speakers in this setup with three in the front of the room (left, center, and right) and two surround speakers in the rear.

The front speakers are responsible for most of the sound in a movie with the center being the focus for dialogue. The rear speakers will handle surround sound, music, and other effects. Also included is a subwoofer that produces the deep rumbling bass that many associate with going to the theater.

3. Dolby Atmos

Dolby Atmos has an AV receiver or processor to direct sound to specific speakers, allowing for the most immersive surround sound experience. To produce this kind of immersion, Dolby Atmos makes use of a 7.1.4 setup. 7 refers to the front, rear, and side speakers, 1 is the subwoofer, and 4 is in reference to the overhead speakers. All of this adds up to a realistic listening experience with 360-degree sound that you’d find in most theaters.
