Most winter road concerns melt away with the start of spring. However, spring brings unique challenges that drivers should be aware of as they commute to work, embark on road trips, and concoct an auto maintenance schedule for the season. This guide covers driving safety tips for springtime.

What Are Hazards to Watch Out for While Driving in Spring?

1. Ice, Salt, & Sand

Although warm temperatures can quickly melt away ice, this slick hazard can persist into springtime. This is especially true if you have wet days and cold nights—the rain may freeze overnight and create a layer of ice that's dangerous for passing vehicles.

Additionally, road crews often lay salt or sand to melt ice and prevent accidents. These materials can stay on the road long after the ice has melted and may affect tire traction. Avoid salty and sandy areas when possible while traveling.

2. Rain

Slipping is a known hazard on snow and ice, but rain poses the same threat. Your tires can't effectively grip the road when you travel through standing pools of water or pass over wet oil slicks. Always use caution while driving in the rain—move slowly, keep your headlights on, and give other drivers plenty of space.

Additionally, make sure that your spring auto maintenance schedule includes a tire inspection. You'll want to rotate or replace your tires if needed for better traction on wet roads.

3. Potholes

Potholes are another common concern during springtime. Snowplows and rapidly-changing weather contribute to pothole formation, so these hazardous holes tend to show up on roads after winter.

If you see a pothole, it's best to drive around it to spare your tires and suspension from a jarring drop. If you have no choice but to drive over it, slow down and release your brakes as you pass over the hole.

4. Animals

During spring, animals emerge from hibernation and roam around in search of mates and food. It's common to see small critters and large ones, such as deer, on highways during spring weather. Always be alert while driving and act quickly if you see an animal on the road.

Follow posted speed limits to stay safe and brake in a straight line if an animal crosses your path. Be especially careful in rural areas or in low-light conditions.
