Flat tires not only put the driver at risk but also affect the safety of others on the road. Thankfully, there are steps you can take to help prevent them. Besides following car manufacturer guidelines and routinely having an auto mechanic service your vehicle, review the following ways to avoid these common mishaps.

What Causes Flat Tires & How Can I Avoid Them?

1. Wear & Tear

Daily driving can gradually wear down tire treading. The thinner it becomes, the more likely the tire will deflate when encountering road hazards such as potholes.

Schedule a mechanic to align and rotate your tires every six months so they can wear evenly. Also, avoid accelerating and decelerating quickly, as these actions can degrade the rubber on your tires.

2. Low Tire Pressure

Check the pressure of all four tires at least once a month. You can do this at home, at a gas station, or have an auto mechanic complete it. Consider keeping an air pump in the trunk for emergency situations.

3. Punctures

Flat tires often occur after drivers run over sharp objects such as nails, screws, glass shards, or other debris. While it’s hard to detect debris at times due to low visibility, try to stay vigilant and drive around it whenever possible.

Prevent mishaps by altering your route if you come across a construction zone or poorly-maintained road. These areas are more likely to have small, sharp objects on the ground that can pierce through the tires.
