An IPA, or India pale ale, is among the most popular craft beers served at bars and brew pubs throughout the U.S. Its history, which dates back several hundred years, is as interesting as its pungently delicious flavor. Whether you're a longtime fan or new to this style, you might want to know more about this unique beer. Below, you'll learn more about the IPA and its history.

Ingredients & Flavor

The most notable feature of the IPA is its high concentration of hops, which are the cone-shaped flowers on the Humulus lupulus plant. Hops appear in most beer styles, as they act as a preservative and add flavor. However, the IPA contains a higher concentration of hops, which gives it a distinctively strong aroma and complex flavor.

Brewers may add one or more varieties of hops during the fermentation process. The result is a beer with sweet, sour, and bitter notes combined with fruity, citrus, and floral accents.

Origins & Evolution

Starting in the 18th century, English brewers began sending ale to the British Empire in eastern tropical climates, where it was too warm to brew beer. They fortified the exported beer with extra hops to keep it fresh while in transit to India. The hops also balanced the malty sweetness of the ale and gave it pale appearance. Hence, the "India pale ale" was born.

One of the first brewers to do this was George Hodgson, whose Bow Brewery created the IPA prototype. He reasoned that a beer with high alcohol and hops content would age like wine during its months-long journey by ship and taste even better by the time it got to India. He was right, as the IPA quickly became popular among British soldiers and civilians in India. They continued to drink it after returning to England, where this beer became well-loved. By the early 20th century, the IPA arrived in the U.S., gradually becoming one of the most popular styles.

Today, microbreweries regularly release new variations on this classic craft beer. Some IPAs have seasonal flavors, such as pumpkin in the fall and fruits in the summer.
