Bedtime storytelling is a fantastic way to connect with your little ones, inspire their imagination, and to create a routine for a good night's rest. Reading is a fundamental part of early childhood development, and if you haven't made a habit of reading to your child before now, it's never too late to start. This guide provides tips for reading to toddlers before bedtime.

How to Help Your Toddler Love Bedtime Stories

1. Add Reading to Your Nightly Routine

Young children thrive on having routines. It adds organization to their day and gives them security knowing that there are specific events that occur each day. Bedtime isn't any different -- a typical bedtime routine might include a nighttime snack, a bath, teeth brushing, and then some time to snuggle and relax before sleeping.

Bedtime is a prime opportunity for reading since your little one will be relaxed and more likely to pay attention to a book. Reading doesn't have to take long, and it slots in nicely with an existing nighttime routine.

2. Let Your Toddler Choose What to Read

As an adult, repetition may seem boring, but it's a key part of early childhood development. Kids learn by having concepts reinforced through repetition, so don't be surprised if you end up reading the same book over and over again. Start with a variety of books and test out different options until you find a few favorites. Get your toddler involved by having them turn the pages or helping them read small sections.

3. Get Comfortable

Bedtime reading doesn't have to take place in bed. If your child's bed is too small to accommodate both of you, or your neck feels strained from looking down to read, find another comfortable place where you can snuggle up for storytime. A comfortable reading nook in the corner or a couch are both wonderful options.

4. Bring the Story to Life

Help your toddler feel engaged through different voices and actions. Ask them questions along the way and talk to them about their favorite parts of the story.

If your child feels engaged, they're more likely to love this new part of the nighttime routine. They're also more likely to continue reading, which will aid in your early childhood development efforts.
