With summer practically here, now is a great time to schedule a swimming pool installation. Your contractor will take care of the work, from site selection to installation, but it also helps to know what to expect. Pool construction can take up to ten weeks to complete from start to finish. The better prepared you are, the less stress you'll experience during the process.

What's Involved in a Swimming Pool Installation?

1. Design Consultation

Many important decisions are made during the initial consultation. Your designer will discuss available features, including steps, decks, adjoining spas, fountains, and waterfalls. The designer will also assess your backyard to determine the best possible location for installation. This can depend on the size of the yard, the planned size and shape of the pool, the location of your home, and the presence of any hills or slopes.

2. Permit Application

Once you've approved a final design and location, your contractor will proceed to get the proper permits for installation. In Phoenix, AZ, permits must be submitted to the City of Phoenix Planning & Development Department.  In addition to the permit application, you must also submit two copies of the plans for the pool installation. All plans must include property lines, pool specs, and the locations of other structures, pumps and accessories, fencing, and other important information. Your pool contractor will have a working knowledge of the permitting process and what is required.

3. Excavation

Heavy-duty equipment like diggers and backhoes will be used to excavate the area where your pool is being installed. Once the site has been excavated, essential plumbing and electrical components are installed. This process is crucial for optimum function as well as safety. While all equipment is grounded, electrical components must also be bonded to regulate the voltage between different equipment types. Both steps greatly reduce the risk of experiencing an electrical shock.

4. Reinforcement & Installation

Steel reinforcement beams, also known as rebar, are used to fortify the pool's interior. Once the rebar frame is in place, concrete is poured to create the base of the pool. The tile comes next, after which is foundation installation for your decking. Decking can be constructed from concrete, but beautiful stone pavers can give the pool an all-natural look.
