If you want to bring a little holiday cheer to your elderly loved one, you may be thinking about decorating their home. Before you invest in twinkle lights, glass balls, and inflatable snowmen, though, it’s wise to consider the constraints of senior living. After all, your relative’s safety is of the utmost importance. While that doesn’t mean you can’t decorate at all, it’s wise to follow a few simple tips when you do.

3 Tips for Putting up Holiday Decorations for the Elderly

1. Keep Cords out of Reach

Do not string lights if their cords will pose a tripping hazard. Seniors are likely to sustain serious injuries when they trip and fall.

In that same vein, avoid putting out larger decorations that inhibit foot traffic. If your loved one isn’t used to walking around such items, he or she may end up tripping over them at some point.

2. Stick to Fake Flames

For total ease, opt for programmable candles that will turn on and off automatically so your relative doesn’t have to worry about them at all. If your loved one wants to light a menorah to keep up tradition, bring the whole family over and do it together.

3. Use Shatterproof Decorations

If your loved one accidentally knocks over an ornament, he or she may have a tough time bending over and sweeping up the pieces. Therefore, it’s best to use only decorations that are not breakable. Examples include plastic balls, fabric ribbons, and knit stockings.
