Many manufacturing and fabrication facilities run equipment that operates on gears. A key factor in keeping these machines online is maintaining their gearboxes properly. To help you get the most out of your equipment, below are some important industrial gearbox maintenance tips.

How to Maintain Industrial Gearboxes

1. Lubricate Regularly

The moving parts in any gearbox create a lot of friction, and therefore heat. Prolonged exposure to heat can weaken or damage the gears, so it's imperative to lubricate the gearbox regularly. Always use the type and brand recommended by the equipment manufacturer. Since oi breaks down and becomes dirty—and loses its ability to lubricate—over time, your best bet is to drain and replace the oil every month or two instead of simply making sure the reservoir is filled.

2. Perform Vibration Testing

If a gearbox is making an unusual amount of noise, consider vibration analysis to determine if something is wrong. Fabrication shops often have numerous techniques to perform vibration testing.

For instance, resonance analysis measures and analyzes the frequencies and vibrations in the gearbox and analyzes them mathematically to determine if interior parts are misaligned or moving. Time domain analysis, on the other hand, evaluates the amplitude and vibration time to identify faults in the rotor bearing system rather than the gears themselves.

3. Keep Gearbox Clean

Dirt, dust, and moisture can wreak havoc on a gearbox. Keep the exterior clean to prevent corrosion and to limit the possibility of contaminants infiltrating the gears. Pay close attention to the breather valves mounted on the gearbox housing, which permit the mechanism to relieve excess pressure without leaking fluids. Keep these areas clean and dry so that, when they open, the device is less vulnerable to contamination. Make sure the breather caps are in place and fastened securely.
