A fabrication process, welding concerns the permanent fusing of two types of metal. It has a variety of applications and comes in numerous forms to suit many commercial projects. Learn about some of the most common forms of welding here.
What Are the Welding Options Available?
1. MIG
Metal Inert Gas, or MIG, welding uses electric arcs and relies on gas to shield the metal during the process. Gas provides a barrier between the fused metal and the elements to prevent damage from oxygen.
The “filler” metal, or metal used to weld, is applied through a wand made of consumable wire. The wire also serves as an electrode that provides the joined sections with electricity. MIG is commonly used for automotive and steel structure projects, as well as pressure vessel fabrication.
2. Arc
Arc processes use electric arcs to fuse two metal pieces together. It is similar and dissimilar to MIG in that it uses a shielding gas to protect the metal from elemental damage but requires a non-consumable electrode to fuse the pieces, respectively. An efficient option, it is frequently utilized for shipbuilding, construction, mechanical, and automotive fabrications.
3. TIG
Tungsten Inert Gas (TIG) welding uses a non-consumable tungsten electrode to make the arc and subsequent weld, allowing tungsten to remain intact.
The TIG method generally uses argon gas to protect the weld, and is applicable to non-ferrous metal fabrications, such as copper, magnesium, and aluminum. It is also applicable to AC and DC power sources, and it’s often used for auto body repairs, automotive manufacturing, and aircraft construction.
4. Laser Beam
A laser beam supplies the heat that fuses two metals together, including carbon steels and titanium. Laser beam welding also provides thermoplastic fabrications.
While many welds are fused by hand, such as TIG, arc, and MIG, the laser beam method offers manual and automated possibilities. It is often used in manufacturing as a result, such as in the creation of auto parts.
