Running your air conditioner keeps your home cool and comfortable on warm days. However, the cool air isn't always distributed equally to each room, and you may find certain areas colder or hotter than others. If you're experiencing this problem at home, here's what you can do to improve the system's function.

How to Promote Even Cooling of Your Home’s Interior

1. Check Your Air Vents

Vents distribute conditioned air throughout your home. However, if they’re obstructed, clogged, or dirty, they may cause uneven cooling. Inspect the vents for dust and debris, and clean or vacuum them for better airflow. Don’t forget to move furniture, window treatments, and other objects that block the openings.

2. Switch Fan From Auto to On

Your air conditioner may need help from the HVAC fan to promote even cooling. The fan is usually set to "Auto" mode on the thermostat so that it only runs when necessary. Try changing the settings to "On" to circulate cool air continuously throughout the interior and see if that solves the problem.

3. Look for Leaks

Conditioned air can escape through even the smallest of gaps, straining your AC unit. Check the attic, basement, and crawl space for cracks, gaps, and holes that might allow air out.

Also, inspect for leaks around doors and windows. If you can see daylight around the frames, air is likely escaping. Shake the frames to see if they move, which suggests air leakage. If you detect leaks, a contractor can fix them with caulking and weatherstripping.

4. Add Insulation in the Attic

Attic insulation is critical for retaining or excluding cool or warm air, resulting in more constant indoor temperatures. The most evident sign of poor insulation is a significant temperature drop as you reach the attic. For instance, your downstairs living room may be warm and comfortable, while the bedrooms upstairs are frigid.

You might also notice a spike in your energy bills due to under-insulation since the HVAC system will have to work harder to maintain the thermostat settings. If the insulation has visible signs of wear or crumbles when you touch it, it's time to add new insulation.

5. Replace Filters

Filters trap pollutants and contaminants to maintain indoor air quality. But when they get clogged with dirt and debris, conditioned air won’t flow as easily, resulting in uneven temperatures throughout your home. In general, you should clean or change the filters every one to two months or as recommended by the manufacturer.
