What Is a Pre-Action System?

Unlike traditional fire sprinkler systems, pre-action systems withhold water from entering the pipe system using an electrical valve.  The pre-action valve is controlled by a detection system that monitors for smoke or heat.  When the detection system senses smoke or heat it sends a signal to open the pre-action valve, filling the pipe system with water which turns the fire sprinkler system into a traditional wet sprinkler system.  Individual sprinkler heads must still open to release water into the affected area just like a traditional wet sprinkler system.

Pre-action systems can also control fire suppression clean agent instead of water.  Also, in some systems, the pipes might be pressurized with condensed air or nitrogen.
