If you seek reliable and stylish flooring for your home, waterproof vinyl may be the right option. This flooring material has grown in popularity over the years due to its strength and durability, but it offers a number of other benefits. Here are a few facts about vinyl flooring to help you decide if it's right for your home.

What Is Waterproof Vinyl Flooring?

This engineered material consists of four layers: a lower cork underlayer designed to insulate sound; a dense, waterproof core; a vinyl top layer in the finish of your choice; and a topmost layer that creates an impenetrable barrier against the elements. This top layer protects the floor from everyday damage, such as scuffs, nicks, scratches, and general wear. Waterproof vinyl is available in various thicknesses, so you can select the one that best meets your family’s needs. In a busy household with kids and pets, for example, you might prefer a thicker top layer for greater resistance against premature wear.

Another advantage of vinyl is its aesthetic appeal. Because it’s engineered, it can be designed to look like virtually any other material. Manufacturers can imprint different hardwood finish, stone, or tile patterns in different colors to create just the look that best complements your home. The waterproof layer protects the floor from spills, pet accidents, and other moisture-related damage.

How Do You Maintain It?

Vinyl is quick and easy to maintain. Sweeping or vacuuming on a regular basis is the best way to keep dirt, dust, and everyday debris at bay. You can also mop it occasionally using a synthetic, vinyl-friendly cleaning solution. Another cleaning option is to simply mix a cup of white vinegar with a gallon of hot water. This will both clean and disinfect the surface.

If a stain or other stubborn mark develops, create a paste with baking soda and water to help break down the buildup. Avoid using anything harsh, like abrasive brushes or scrubbers, as these could cause light damage to the topmost layer of the vinyl. Instead, massage the paste into the mark, then dab it with a damp microfiber cloth and finish with a dry cloth. Minimize the floor's exposure to sharp objects by trimming pets’ nails, taking off heeled shoes, and picking up furniture to move it instead of dragging the legs across the vinyl.
