If your child is interested in taking dance classes, you may want to encourage them to take tap. This form of dance is popular among kids thanks to the fun sound of tap shoes. Take a look at what makes this form of dancing unique.

A Brief Guide to Tap Dance

What are tap shoes?

Tap dancing is inherently tied to tap shoes, as the entire form of this style relies on the sound of the shoes against the floor. Metal plates, known as taps, are placed on the toes and heels to create a sound and rhythm. They come in several different styles and at all varying price points. For young beginners, stick with low-heel shoes, while more experienced performers will want shoes with a higher heel.

Is it difficult to learn?

Children and adults alike can take tap dancing classes—and you're never too old to learn how to dance. Children will learn a handful of easy moves to master and will perform simple routines. However, dancers who become professionals or compete will have to train for years to reach an expert level.

How did it originate?

Tap dance originated in the U.S. as a mix of many other dancing techniques, including West African step dances and English jigs. Much of the rhythm in the dancing comes from African tribal practices. Traditional drumming was a way to keep rhythm, but when Africans were first taken to this country, they had to keep rhythm another way, sans drums. They made similar sounds with their feet to keep that dance alive. Tap shoes eventually became integrated into the dance in the 1920s and the dance became popular on Broadway and in film.

Is it still popular today?

Yes, tap dancing is still found throughout the world today. While there was a lull in popularity during the '60s and '70s, the 1980s brought a revival of tap in musicals. Today, you'll see performers branch off into two types of tap: theatrical and rhythm. The former follows more traditional aspects of this style and is performed in musical theather. The latter has the dancer focus on creating rhythm with their shoes as opposed to dancing to music.
