Bulk mulch is an—often organic—material applied to the ground to prevent moisture evaporation, limit weed growth, and add nutrients to the soil. Common types of mulch include wood chips and compost. Inorganic options include gravel, recycled rubber, and even plastic sheeting. Below are some tips to help you ready your yard for mulching.

How to Prepare Your Yard for a Bulk Mulch Application

1. Remove Weeds

One of the main purposes of mulch is to prevent weed seeds from taking root in the soil. For the best results, remove existing weeds before you mulch the yard and garden. The more thoroughly you weed the area, the less trouble you'll experience later with unwanted growth.

Remove the weeds by the roots instead of merely beheading them; otherwise, they are likely to return and mar your garden. A good trick is to spray with herbicide one or two weeks before mulching and withdraw them by hand. Dead weeds are easier to remove.

2. Trim Back Nearby Bushes & Trees

Trees and shrubberies create a lot of debris. To keep this out of your garden beds and prevent it from interfering with plant growth, trim back overhanging tree branches and bushes.

This is particularly important for deciduous species with large leaves and evergreen species that drop pinecones. These items can block sunlight and slow the growth of flowers and vegetables.

3. Till the Beds

Young plants can spread their roots more quickly and improve the uptake of moisture and nutrients in the soil that is loose and moist. Transform hard, impacted soil into a soft bed for healthy plants by applying a rototiller.

Dig out rocks and roots, turn the earth, and water liberally before laying down the mulch. The ground cover helps prevent evaporation and protects the soil from drying out and hardening in the sun.
